Every year, around 13 billion plastic bags are used in the UK. That's a lot of bags. So many that over one million bags are being used every minute (worldwide) and they're damaging our environment.
Before you purchase a plastic product think of the environment and consider the alternative - biodegradable plastics or paper
Bag Facts
13 billion plastic bags are used each year and despite strenuous efforts to reduce this figure and pressure on large corporations to re-call and dispose of a certain proportion of them, the number is still rising. In 2007 the government’s Department of the Environment, Defra, collated the following facts about plastic bags:
- 88% of shoppers put their shopping into free plastic bags which are given out by shops.
- An average of 300 bags per adult are used each year.
- We use an average of 3-4 bags each trip.
- 45% of shoppers have bought a bag for life – but only 12% use them.
By their very nature, plastic bags are lightweight and the right shape to easily blow away. Besides people dropping them, plastic bags catch the wind like sails and are whisked out of bins, landfill sites and council tips.
Plastic bags can travel many miles in this way but once they land on water, due to its surface tension, they remain there. This means that our seas and rivers are full of old plastic bags.During the Marine Conservation Society’s Beachwatch survey for 2007, seven and a half thousand bags were recorded on UK beaches.
This is an increase of two thousand within three years and the number is unfortunately still climbing, despite growing awareness of their environmental damage. It means that for every kilometre of beach surveyed, approximately 45 bags were found. [source: www.pollutionissues.co.uk] |
About Biodegradable plastic bags
Biodegradable plastic bags are environmentally friendlier, designed with a controlled lifetime using Totally Degradable Plastic Additives (TDPA) technology in the manufacturing process. Biodegradable plastic bags will degrade in as little time as a few months to five years when discarded as the additive accelerates the oxidation of the plastic.
The Biodegradable plastic bag degradation process, triggered by UV light, heat or mechanical stress, occurs at a rate tailored to the buyer's requirements, breaking down over a period of months or years. Once the plastic begins to oxidise it becomes brittle and susceptible to the usual agents of degradation, such as moisture and microbes.
We believe that biodegradable poly bags can help the environment and we recommend you use this product.
Biodegradable plastic bags offer the same strength and quality as the traditional polythene bags, they look and feel the same so your customers can use without worrying about the impact on the environment
Our range of Biodegradable plastic bags not only continue to serve shops and promotional event but will literally disappear after their job is done |
